2019 Ozskár Maurer 'Crazy Lud' Serbia
A light and accessible, every day red wine with notes of juicy red fruit, bergamot tea, and green herbs. The ‘Crazy Lud’ is a blend of 60% Blaufrankisch and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon that’s harvested early then fermented and aged in neutral Hungarian oak barrels. Best served with a slight chill.
The Maurer family has been producing wine for four generations in the region. During the 19th century they moved from Salzburg to the southern part of Hungary. They now farm 16 acres of land including 6 acres just across the border in the Serbian wine region of Szabadka. There has been a consistent focus on planting old native varietals in the vineyards and adhering to natural practices in the cellar including spontaneous fermentation. The vines are grown on steep slopes and sandy hills facing the Danube in a volcanic sedimentary soil which lends itself to a deep minerality in the wine.
