2019 Gilles Bonnefoy ‘Migmatite’ Côtes du Forez, Loire Valley
A beautiful light and lifted wine from the Gamay St. Romain grape, which has a smaller juice to skin ratio than the Gamay we know and love. Bright red fruit notes, pepper, and violet. It has a velvety texture, like smooth granite, with supple tannins.
Côtes du Forez is closest to the river’s source, located on an ancient geological fault line with approximately 100 extinct volcanoes, about 30 of which are located in Côtes du Forez. While the appellation is technically associated with the Loire Valley, its style and proximity to Beaujolais cannot be denied. Owned and run by Gilles Bonnefoy, Les Vins de la Madone comprises 8 hectares in total, a third of which is made up of vines of at least 30 years of age. Gilles’ family did not own any vineyards, so by sheer hard work he has assembled his own holdings, with 75% of his vines planted on volcanic soil, including basalts, clays and granites; the rest are grown on clay and granitic soils. Starting out in 1997, he converted to organic farming in 2001 and then biodynamics in 2008.
